The Alabama Crimson Tide football season came to a very disappointing end after its 38-3 blowout to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl.

This was the type of loss that nobody saw coming, but it has become a trend with bad losses by a wide margin as of late. As if losing wasn’t bad enough, the timing of it didn’t help with the transfer portal opening up the next morning, with players flooding it already.

Alabama has already lost a few players to the portal, but it just took its biggest hit with Jaylen Mbakwe entering his name just a week after saying he wouldn’t.

Former 5-star recruit Jaylin Mbakwe enters the transfer portal

Mbakwe’s decision to enter the transfer portal was expected with his lack of playing time, even with being the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2024 class. A lot of people expected him to stay; however, after he said almost two weeks ago to Austin Duncan Media that he was “definitely not” entering the transfer portal.

How Jaylen Mbakwe’s decision impacts Alabama

Now that he officially enters the portal, he should be a top name for a lot of teams, and now Alabama has to move on and focus on other players who have a similar decision to make. I asked fellow A to Z Sports Alabama writer Rob Gregson his thoughts on Mbakwe’s decision, and what impact it has on Alabama’s team moving forward.

“It’s not a surprise to see a former 5-star recruit with the talent of Mbakwe enter the portal after struggling to see the field at Alabama. His switch from defensive back to wide receiver didn’t pan out for the Tide, and it’s interesting to see him labeled as an athlete in this portal process. Perhaps another school decides to utilize his athletic potential at WR, or maybe he goes back to what was working on the defensive side of the ball. From Alabama’s standpoint, the WR room is already loaded next year with the likes of players like Lotzeir Brooks and Ryan Williams returning. The team is also looking to make moves in the portal and has an exciting freshman class as well.” – Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports Alabama

There were high hopes for the Williams and Mbakwe duo, but it just didn’t work out, and now Alabama will have to move forward. After a loss as it suffered in the Rose Bowl, the team needs a reset in the locker room, and everyone needs to look in the mirror and get that Alabama brand of football back. We will see who wants to stick around and fight for it next year, and who wants to jump ship and head elsewhere.
