The Auburn Tigers are in a position they don’t want to be – close to potentially benching the quarterback you paid some good NIL money to play for you. However, Jackson Arnold just isn’t getting the job done, so head coach Hugh Freeze has to look somewhere. Maybe that somewhere is on the bench, for Ashton Daniels.

“Not anymore,” Hugh Freeze said when asked about redshirting QB Ashton Daniels. “We are just going to play to win with him. He’s prepared to play the last few. If you go watch the game and you’re watching it live, it’s hard to complain about Jackson [Arnold] in the first half of the last two games for sure. That game could have easily been 14-0 after the second drive, and Jackson was playing at a high level. We have to get that consistency throughout the game or we have to go find a spark.”

Auburn Tigers need a closer at QB

In just about every single game they have played this season, they have had a chance to win the ball game near the end of it. And, if it wasn’t at the end, then they definitely had a chance to win it at the half. I don’t want to rub salt in the wound, but let’s go back to the Georgia Bulldogs game. Auburn could have been up 17-0 going into the half. Instead, they choked it away.

In a way, the same can be said about this game against the Missouri Tigers. They had a highly ranked team on the ropes and should have actually closed it out. That’s been the story of the season – this is one heck of a first-half team in some games, and one very bad second-half team.

So, switching things up would be smart. Like Freeze said, too, Arnold has had some incredible moments, but a lot of this resembles what happened last year with him and the Oklahoma Sooners. They need someone who can throw the ball, not take sacks, and win ball games.

Jackson Arnold’s stats in 2025

  • He has a passer rating of 122.3
  • 1,190 passing yards
  • Five touchdowns
  • One interception over seven games
  • 63.3% completion percentage
  • 261 rushing yards
  • Seven rushing touchdowns

Freeze is running out of time, so it’s time he tried anything else. Daniels played some big games at Stanford. He’s a senior who can also run a bit, setting Stanford’s season QB rushing record. This week will be crucial, but there is a large part of the fan base that wants Arnold on the bench.
