Adam on his picks:
In this exercise, I really leaned into the “mascot-first” sort of classic logos. While a letter or word can work, I think college teams reached their peak in logos when they were a bit more lighthearted, with a bit of vibrancy and uniqueness. Accordingly, I also tried to cover a lot of bases when it came to colors. Oregon, being the 1.1, was one I felt great about, with the well-known green and yellow shown prominently. The 3D aspect of the duck and the “O” was incredible. With Louisville and Mississippi State, I continued to lean into the mascot theme, using two different shades of red. Give me the walking Bulldog over the walking Gator or Tiger head from a couple of schools in the SEC.
UNC may be the best value pick I got in this draft. The legendary blue involved, coupled with a Tar Heel mascot head that belongs on every piece of their merch for the rest of time. Truly timeless. With Tulane as my final pick, I wanted to go off the grid a bit more, and you cannot tell me that logo isn’t incredibly fun. The mascot surfing a literal Green Wave – how did it not last so much longer at the school? While there were some snubs I had to make, I’m ecstatic about the variety and upside of this class from the spot of the first pick.
Rob on his picks:
The 1979-1994 Florida Gators logo is one of the most iconic in the program’s history. Here is a silhouette showing the letters U and F, with an alligator on top and the state of Florida at the bottom. It screams the state of Florida and the Gators brand. The 1974 to 2000 Alabama Crimson Tide logo is, in my opinion, the best in the program’s history. Here we have the famous elephant splitting the big A with Crimson Tide draped underneath. It represents everything that the University stands for as the Capstone in the state of Alabama.
The 1970-1983 Terrapins logo has to be the best in the program’s history. Unlike what Maryland dons now, the throwback features an actual turtle, representing the school’s mascot and colors, with a black-and-red shell and cheering for the big M. Finally, how can you go wrong with the Florida Atlantic University logo from 2000-2005? Representing the burrowing Owls that call campus home in Boca Raton, the logo features an owl swooping in on its prey with the red letters of FAU over its torso. It speaks to the school’s tradition and the programs’ colors.
Justin on his picks:
I’m not sure it’s a debate about who has the coolest logos of the three of us who drafted. It’s me, by the way. Now, the most iconic, that’s a different discussion. Starting off with the coolest logo, maybe ever, in the Duke Blue Devils with the third overall pick, set me up for a successful draft, no matter what happened. I just happened to continue that trend of really cool logos. The Georgia Bulldogs logo looks like one of the meanest logos you will find. You want your team to come off as one that’s going to hurt you, and that logo does it.
Finishing it off with some of the coolest logos ever, like the Cavs logo, the Sweater Hog, and the Blazers’ cool logo, seals this draft for me. They are all cool in their own way, and I didn’t go back to the book of Genesis to get some of my logos, where my compadres cough, Adam, decided to go back to the great depression. Mine are cool, so I win.
