On the heels of Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko revealing that adding NFL-caliber talent is key for his program to take the next step forward, Bill Belichick was able to flip a key recruiting target for the Aggies. 4-star defensive tackle Trashawn Ruffin has decommitted from the Aggies in favor of Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels.
Ruffin had pledged to Elko and the Aggies in October 2024, but he'll remain local to learn from Belichick's NFL-laden coaching staff instead. This is a major loss for Texas A&M as they look to build its trenches. Previously listed at 307 pounds, Ruffin was reported at 340 pounds by On3's Hayes Fawcett.
Ruffin is now Belichick's top-ranked recruit since taking over the program in December. Ranked No. 238 in ESPN's top 300 and the 12th-best prospect in North Carolina, was initially choosing between Texas A&M, Georgia, and Ohio State.
The recent commitment comes shortly after Ruffin's unofficial visit to the Tar Heels, where he attended a North Carolina-Duke basketball game and had the opportunity to meet former All-American defenders from North Carolina, Lawrence Taylor and Julius Peppers.
Playing at North Duplin High School in Mt. Olive, North Carolina, Ruffin is the ninth recruit to join the Tar Heels’ 2026 class. He is the second in-state player to commit this cycle, alongside quarterback Zaid Lott from Charlotte, North Carolina.
This decision is a setback for the Aggies' 2026 recruiting efforts, as they currently rank No. 9 nationally according to 247Sports' composite rankings. A&M has secured commitments from three defensive linemen in this class, including Jordan Carter from Georgia, as well as verbal pledges from Samu Moala and Jermaine Kinsler, all of whom are four-star prospects.
Although there isn't a five-star recruit yet, the class features an impressive lineup of seven four-star prospects, with Carter being the highest-rated and wide receiver Aaron Gregory also included.
The Aggies are well into their offseason program, with spring football set to kick off on Thursday.
