Cameron Ward flashed plenty of talent at both Incarnate Word and Washington State before joining Miami this past off-season, but it looks like he's found his perfect fit. Head coach Mario Cristobal has been building the Hurricanes roster for this very season and a quarterback just like Ward ever since joining Miami back in 2022. Back to back top ten recruiting classes and stellar transfer additions have created what seems to be the perfect storm for 2024.
Following their 50-15 thrashing of USF, Cameron Ward and Miami are now officially on pace to post the most efficient offense in college football history. They're averaging 8.8 yards per offensive play thus far and showing no signs of slowing down.
The current record for most yards per play in a season by a single team's offense is held by the 2018 Oklahoma Sooners at 8.6 yards per play. That offense had first overall pick and current Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback Kyler Murray, star Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Hollywood Brown, Trey Sermon, and more.
This year's Miami squad doesn't necessarily have the same depth of verified ballers, but that perception of the talent on the Hurricanes will surely change in the coming weeks if they continue dominating anywhere near the extent that they are now. And if Cameron Ward keeps making insane throws like the one featured in the post below, he's going to go down as one of the best college football quarterbacks of this era.
From the right hash, Cameron Ward slings a perfectly placed deep ball across the whole field into the Cover-2 gap just out of the reach of both defensive backs, hitting wide receiver Samuel Brown in stride so he can finish for the 76-yard touchdown.
It's that kind of arm talent and chemistry with his incredible set of playmakers that continues making the Miami Hurricanes offense unstoppable. Isaiah Horton, Xavier Restrepo, and Samuel Brown all tallied at least 75 yards or more through the air against USF alone.
The offensive success hasn't been limited to the aerial attack either. The ground game has been nearly as dominant thanks in part to the addition of Oregon State transfer Damien Martinez.
Martinez found the end zone three times on Saturday night, adding 81 more yards from scrimmage to his total on the season. True freshman Jordan Lyle continues to flash as well, taking one of his carries on Saturday for a 91-yard touchdown.
Miami still has a long way to go before they prove they're truly "back", but they're well on their way to setting records and new standards for the Hurricanes program under Mario Cristobal through the first four weeks of the 2024 college football season.
