Can the Ohio State Buckeyes avoid the dreaded championship hangover in 2025?
That's the question that Ryan Day and his team will be looking to answer this fall after their dominant performance in the College Football Playoff last season.
Longtime college football writer Tom Fornelli, of CBS Sports, thinks Ohio State will be just fine in 2025.
At least during the regular season.
Fornelli has the Buckeyes winning 11 games during the 2025 regular season with their lone loss coming against Texas.
From CBS Sports: I'll be honest with you. I expected to go under here. My belief was that Ohio State would be like a lot of champions in the modern game: still very good, but struggling to replace key starters in an era where you can no longer horde depth so easily. Then I did the exercise, and this team won 11 games anyway! The truth is, it'll all come down to whether they can win two of three games against Texas, Penn State, and Michigan. Clearly, I think they can.
Ohio State lost some important players from their 2024 championship squad, including quarterback Will Howard, pass rusher Jack Sawyer, and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, among several others.
That's a lot of production to replace. But the Buckeyes still have arguably the best player in the nation in wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. And as long as he's on the field, he's a threat to score at any time — regardless of who's throwing him the ball.
Ohio State has more than enough talent to run it back in 2025, they just have to make sure they keep their focus through the grind of a long season. That's something that was a bit of a problem for the Buckeyes at times during the 2024 regular season. You can't win it all without first getting into the tournament.
