Deion Sanders and Colorado Football continue to be the center of attention for the wrong reasons this offseason. This time it's not about Coach Prime continuing to bring in a bunch of backup-level talents and mercenaries. And it's not about him completely abandoning prototypical high school recruiting. It isn't about his hilarious notion that Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders should refuse to play for certain NFL teams. This time it's former player and elite cornerback recruit Cormani McClain calling him out.
Former five star cornerback Cormani McClain chose to enter the Transfer Portal here recently. His departure was immediately shrugged off by many simply because Coach Prime called him out early last fall about his grades and work ethic. But the truth of the matter is that McClain developed rather quickly, and played 300 snaps on defense for Colorado last fall, becoming an every down player late in the season.
McClain shared a YouTube video about his next steps now that he's leaving Colorado. He didn't really try to hide what he thought about his former program, saying he wants to play for a "real program" and doesn't want to "play for clicks":
McClain's full quotes make it quite clear how he feels about Colorado:
He looks forward to "[being] a part of a real and great program that's going to impact me at my best ability." And then elaborated further by saying "I feel like I just don't want to play for clicks. I actually want to be involved with a great leading program that's going to develop players."
Deion Sanders and Colorado are clearly the exact opposite of a "leading program" having finished 1-8 in the Pac-12 last season. And they certainly don't seem interested in long-term player development given that 20 of their 22 expected starters are transfers.
It was only a matter of time before some former player(s) started to call out Deion Sanders and Colorado for their atypical antics. Showing up and telling the majority of the roster they're going to be replaced. Asking, "What are we losing?", in response to a question about the players entering the portal, acting as if every player leaving the program doesn't matter. That's going to rub some players the wrong way.
It's clear many former players (and college football fans) are done with Colorado's "playing for clicks" model already and season two hasn't even begun for Deion Sanders. McClain may be the first big name player to speak up, but he certainly won't be the last.
