Penn State has had far more than their fair share of quarterback struggles over the years, so it's refreshing to finally see a real passer finding success for the Nittany Lions. Drew Allar continues to impress this season as he helped Penn State dominate UCLA on Saturday in their 27-11 victory.
Allar is quickly climbing the all-time leaderboards for Penn State in several categories, but just took one unique lead that speaks volumes when it comes to historic Nittany Lions quarterback play. After completing 17 of his 24 passes (over 70% completion rate) against UCLA, Drew Allar now leads all Penn State quarterbacks in completion percentage (minimum 100 pass attempts) at 61.8%.
If you're unfamiliar with typical completion rates in college football just know this. Coming into this past weekend there were 68 starting quarterbacks with a higher completion rate than 61.8% this season alone. It's absolutely wild that there's never been a quarterback in the history of Penn State football to post a completion rate higher than that throughout their career, but that's been the sad reality.
Sean Clifford held the career completion percentage lead before today at 61.4%, but if Drew Allar keeps playing as well as he has been thus far for James Franklin and Penn State he should easily hold onto this statistical lead.
Completion rate isn't everything. In fact, it's meaning is quite minimal in measuring true in-game impact for quarterbacks. But it's good to see Allar continually taking steps towards truly being the best Penn State quarterback of all time. And it's not just his completion rate proving this.
Allar is also approaching the all-time records for passer rating, adjusted yards per pass attempt (which includes a weighted look at touchdowns and interceptions), and EPA per play. He's now 14-3 as a starter and has Penn State well on their way to their first ever College Football Playoff bid. If Drew Allar continues impressing at his current rate, he might just lead Penn State to their best season in nearly 40 years.
