It's been more than a decade since EA Sports released a new college football video game, but the wait is nearly over. The new College Football 25 is set to release some time this summer. And with every bit of small new information that emerges college football fans collectively erupt in completely unhinged excitement.

Today, EA Sports teased the cover of the upcoming video game and it was quite the site to behold. It featured prominent star players from Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Colorado. Plus several generic players from a number of other big brands across the sport like USC, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Washington, and more. However, the exact players featured on the cover sparked some controversy among college football fans everywhere.

College Football 25 cover controversy

The official players featured on the EA Sports College Football 25 cover release teaser are as follows:

– Donovan Edwards, RB Michigan
– Quinn Ewers, QB Texas
– Travis Hunter, CB/WR Colorado
– Jalen Milroe, QB Alabama
– Carson Beck, QB Georgia
– Quinshon Judkins, RB Ohio State

No matter what the cover of the long-awaited video game was going to look like it was never going to good enough for some fans. But the overreaction and hilarious disappointment from many was quite the spectacle. Parker Fleming, a prominent college football analyst, had the perfect reaction on X (Twitter) today that encapsulated the underwhelmed feelings of many fans:

"Ah yes, all my favorite football players…" It's clear Parker wasn't too excited about EA's choices.

There had been debates as to who would actually grace the cover of this epic game in recent months. Many wanted legacy players from years past featured. Others wanted storied head coaches like Nick Saban. But EA Sports seems to have gone with the "current stars of the game" approach.

Apparently it's a bad thing to feature three star quarterbacks whose teams will very likely make the College Football Playoff? And Travis Hunter's nearly unprecedented cross-positional play and otherworldly stardom isn't worthy of the cover? And two star running backs for the reigning national champs and their premier rivals shouldn't make the cover either? These are objectively excellent choices from EA Sports.

Donovan Edwards, RB Michigan

Many fans were okay with some of the names featured on the cover, but the one name that caused more controversy than any other was Donovan Edwards.

Edwards played through a tear in his patellar tendon back in 2022, but still produced 1200 yards from scrimmage as a true sophomore. He dominated Ohio State for over 200 yards and two touchdowns that season, then amassed over 300 yards from scrimmage in the back to back Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff games that followed.

However, Edwards struggled for much of 2023 after having offseason surgery to repair the tear in his knee, only amassing a total of 746 yards from scrimmage. But when it came to the most important and final game in Michigan's season he trampled Washington in the College Football Championship Game for over 100 yards and two scores. Naturally, box score scout college football fans from around the world had to chime in, making their disdain for Edwards' presence on the cover quite clear (like Justin Spiro in the post below).

The truth is, Edwards is a phenomenal talent. He's set to be the feature running back on the defending national champions' roster at Michigan. And due to his big-game heroics over the last two years, he's the most marketable athlete on the team by far. It's just that simple.

But even beyond Edwards' marketability, he does have a few special stats going for him that set him apart as a talent on the field. Since 1970, he's the only player in college football to have rushing, passing, and receiving touchdowns of over 75 yards. An incredible feat.

Is Edwards the perfect fit for the College Football 25 cover? No. Are any of the other players featured the perfect fit either? Absolutely not. Why? Because there's not a single cover to the video game that would have been good enough for many fans.

The relaunching of this game has been put on an inconceivably high pedestal with expectations beyond reality because college football fans are just the best. They're the most fanatical, irrational, amazing group of sports fans out there, and it's a beautiful thing. And in the end, the cover of the video game won't matter as long as we can all spend endless hours building a dynasty out of our favorite teams in the sport that we love so much.
