In the latest edition of Good, Better, Bets, Mike Donzuso and I broke down this week in college football and week one in the NFL. There are several college football games in particular that are very interesting potential plays in the betting world.
We broke down some of our favorites to hopefully make some money. Here are the best bets of the week in college football. It promises to be a very, very intriguing week of football action.
(23) Georgia Tech (-2.5) at Syracuse – O/U 61.5 – money line: Syracuse +115
Georgia Tech got their season off to a hot start, defeating Florida State in Dublin 24-21. At the time, that looked like an incredible win for the Yellow Jackets. With how the Seminoles looked during their 28-13 loss to Boston College a couple of days ago, it turns out that win may not have been quite as strong as people initially thought.
Now they go up against a Syracuse team that has a lot of confidence under head coach Fran Brown. Not only does it feel like the Orange could cover the spread as an underdog with former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord under center, there is reason to believe that they could win outright. Take them against the spread, and think about double downing on the money line as well.
(14) Tennessee (-8.5) at (24) NC State – O/U 61.5 – money line: NC State +260
Tennessee looked tremendous against FCS foe Chattanooga, especially on offense. Led by sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the team looks explosive. You can always expect a Josh Heupel offense to make big plays, and put up points. The NC State defense, which is usually very good, has a tough matchup in the second game.
While those challenges exist, an 8.5-point spread for an away team and against a quality football team like the Wolfpack is just too much. It feels like a slight overreaction based on NC State’s slow start against Western Carolina last week. If the team is able to move the ball well enough, covering that 8.5-point spread feels like a no brainer. The under could also be an interesting play.
BYU at SMU (-11.5) – O/U 55.5 – money line: BYU +380
SMU is a very talented team on paper, but they got off to a bit of a slower start against Nevada in the first game, but had a tune up game last week against Houston Baptist. So far, the offense has been pretty underwhelming for the Mustangs, which has been pretty surprising. Now they take on a talented BYU defense that is starting to get healthy.
The Cougars have a playmaker on each level of that defense, including defensive end Tyler Batty, former Weber State linebacker Jack Kelly, and defensive back Micah Harper. That side of the ball has more than enough firepower to limit the SMU attack. With some talented offensive players on the BYU roster, as well, they have a chance to potentially win the game outright. Them covering the spread feels like a safe bet.
