Over the course of the second half of the season, the Florida Gators' defense showed a drastic amount of improvement. They held Ole Miss to 17 points and only allowed a garbage-time touchdown against Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl.

There were a lot of reasons for the improvement, but simplifying the defense along with the talent was the major result of the improvement. One of the areas that needs to be fortified ahead of the 2025 season is on the back end.

Gators S Asa Tuner could get another year

One player who was expected to make an impact on the defensive side of the football was safety Asa Turner. The Washington transfer unfortunately ended up playing just one game for the Gators in the season opener against Miami FL. He suffered a non-contact leg injury in the second half and didn't return to the field.

According to a report from Graham Hall of 247 Sports, Turner had surgery on his right hamstring. That should significantly help his case for a medical redshirt. They could use more depth at safety and he'd make a big difference.

Head coach Billy Napier spoke about Turner during the season and had some candid comments.

"Injuries are challenging, man, " head coach Napier said on Oct. 28. "It's one of the more challenging things for the players. And coaches as well, I think. Asa has been a very steady player and person/leader. He's provided some veteran kind of good work ethic, example, how to communicate, go about your business.

"He's done a nice job in that regard. And even when he's been absent there are some things he's done to help the squad as a whole. He's another player that's on a long list of hopeful to get him back."

If Turner gets a medical redshirt, he would likely be a depth player for the Gators in 2025.
