When the Florida Gators hired head coach Billy Napier, they knew it would take time to rectify the mess left for him when he took the job in December of 2021. There were discussions about him potentially getting fired.

Luckily for Napier, quarterback DJ Lagway stepped in to save the Gators' football program and they ended the season on a four-game winning streak and are one of the more interesting teams heading into the 2025 season.

Billy Napier has most to prove in 2025

As we enter the 2025 season, there isn't anyone with more to prove. On3 Sports' Ari Wasserman named Napier as the coach with the most to prove, echoing the same sentiments that I did above.

"There was a point during last season when it felt like Napier was going to be fired. But Florida stuck with him — and, by proxy, quarterback D.J. Lagway — and the Gators surged to end the season. The heat may heave eased for the time being, but he’ll enter next season with more pressure than even last year. It feels like the last stand for Napier to show the Gators faithful that Florida can compete at the highest level in the SEC. There’s a lot of pressure on Lagway — who is limited this spring — to perform, too. And Florida’s schedule is every bit as challenging as it was this year. Is Napier the guy in Gainesville? By this time next year, we’ll know the answer to that."

One of the reasons why athletic director Scott Stricklin is giving Napier another season is the time he needed to build out the infrastructure in the program. The idea was to build it up like Nick Saban built up Alabama and he is coming close to achieving that. There is one other element that hasn't happened yet: wins.

If the wins don't happen, Napier will be out the door. He needs to find a way to win this year. Otherwise, the Gators will be back to square one.
