Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier has turned things around, from potentially being fired during the 2024 season to being a popular College Football Playoff contender. One reason for the sudden change is the uptick in recruiting.

The latest win for Napier's recruiting is making the final five of 2026 Georgia three-star offensive lineman Bear McWhorter.  Joining Florida in the final five are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, and South Carolina Gamecocks.

Florida Gators target sets commitment date

The product of Carterville Cass also set a commitment date of February 28th. McWhorter gave an interesting quote about Napier with an interesting tidbit.

“I’ll only visit where I commit to. Relationships are a huge one for me in my decision. Getting around the players, strength and support staffs and coaches are all equally as important. I’m looking for the best group of people to surround myself with. I trust coach Napier big-time. I have known him for a long time. My dad played college ball with him at Furman.”

An interesting element of McWhorter's recruitment is Napier's connection with McWhorter's father. That type of camaraderie can often influence players to go to a certain institution.

McWhorter, who is the 69th-ranked interior offensive lineman in On3's rankings, but ranked as high as ninth on ESPN's rankings. He was committed to Arkansas at one point, but recommitted after an early commitment.

Right now, McWhorter has only visited Gainesville once on April 12th, 2023. He's visited Michigan and Alabama four times already, South Carolina once, and has yet to visit Clemson.

So far, the Gators only have three commits in the 2026 recruiting class with multiple other targets.

  • Four-star QB Will Griffin
  • Four-star CB Jaelen Waters
  • Three-star S Devin Jackson
