Thursday night was a weird one for the Florida Gators. They got the news that secondary coach Will Harris was departing for Miami (FL) to be their safeties coach. It was a big hit for head coach Billy Napier, as Harris was viewed as both a good recruiter and position coach, having developed eight NFL Draft picks at Washington.
When the news broke, it was quite a shock, as it certainly felt like Napier had assembled his staff for the 2025 season. There were plenty of reactions from players and fans alike, including their final commit from the 2025 class, who flipped right before National Signing Day.
Will Harris reveals why he left Florida
It was a surprise to everyone that Harris was leaving, but the reasons behind his departure were unknown. It certainly hurt knowing that he was both staying in-state and going to a rival who the Gators travel to face early in the season.
Harris took to social media to say thank you to the University of Florida and the players. In his post, Harris revealed why he was departing Gainesville.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Billy Napier and Scott Stricklin for giving me the opportunity to coach at The University of Florida. Billy – As they say, the ones who bleed together are brothers. We went through the trenches last year and pulled out one hell of a finish. With that being said, I understand business is business, and you have to do what you believe is best for the University of Florida’s football program. I appreciate you.
Mr. Stricklin – I appreciate you always providing an open door policy and your transparency and willingness to listen. I’ll definitely miss our good convos.
Gator Nation – Love me or hate me, I understand. Either way, it was one cool ass season. Again, business is business
To my guys – Love is an understatement. Nothing can break our bonds. When you’ve stacked bricks together, they could never be knocked down.
All in all, you must all know – I am excited and blessed to step forward into this next opportunity.
So, this makes things a little bit more interesting. Harris is saying he didn't leave on his own accord but was forced out. It could explain why new co-defensive coordinator Vinnie Sunseri, who got hired in January, was also named safeties coach, taking some of Harris' responsibilities away from him.
The timing is certainly interesting, as Harris was the lead recruiter for Konanbanny, who was the final commit in the 2025 recruiting class.
While it certainly hurt to see Harris go to a bitter rival, it's not his fault either, as he was seemingly pushed out of his position.
Florida Gators will be well represented at NFL Scouting Combine with chance to shoot up draft boards
