Interim HC Billy Gonzales says what every Florida Gators fan is thinking after brutal loss vs. Tennessee Volunteers
It’s been brutal for the Gators this season.
The Florida Gators had a 10-game winning streak in The Swamp ended on Saturday night, as the Tennessee Volunteers got a 31-11 win, marking their first since the Ron Zook era in 2003. It also marked their first time winning back-to-back games since 2003 and 2004.
It started early, as the Volunteers took the opening drive for a touchdown, going 75 yards in nine plays to get the score. The first drive for the Gators also started promising, as quarterback DJ Lagway found running back Jadan Baugh streaking down the field for a 42-yard completion. Unfortunately, that was when things unraveled for the Gators.
Early penalty deflated the Gators
On that play, left tackle Austin Barber was called for holding. It was a controversial call, as it was a snatch/trap maneuver, something that is not a holding call. Well, they still called it, and you could feel the team deflate after that play. Interim head coach Billy Gonzales confirmed that after the game.
“When you start off with a big play in the pass game and all of a sudden you get a penalty, it deflates you,” said Gonzales after the game. “And it’s hard to dig yourself out of a hole when you have a big play and all of a sudden now you’re moving behind the sticks.”
That kind of thing is brutal for the Gators, and something that’s been a constant for them. There have been so many drives this season where they have had a penalty and it completely destroys any momentum you can have.
“We didn’t put a ton of drives together,” continued Gonzales. “Offensively, a penalty negated a big pass play, and we had to punt the ball on the first drive. Second drive, we had three plays, and we punted. We missed a block by a block on the right side of the line up front. It was a good play. We missed a block.”
In the first half, the Gators had five drives, gained 107 yards, and had zero points to show for it. Unfortunately, it’s been a constant for the Gators this season, and that has been a huge factor in their poor season in 2025.
