The Florida Gators nearly had a disastrous homecoming on Saturday, but they were able to pull out a 23-21 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The winning play came from sophomore nose tackle Michai Boireau with an interception, sealing the third win of the Florida Gators’ season.

It was a bittersweet win for the fanbase. They desperately want a coaching change, with head coach Billy Napier having been on the hot seat for the better part of the last two seasons. The rumors have been flying around about his job status, and the entire stadium started chanting,Fire Billy.”

Billy Napier comments on his job status after homecoming win

A win is always a good thing, but for the Gators, it comes with a different set of connotations. Napier was asked if he felt like this was his last game at Florida. His answer was exactly what you would have expected from him.

“No, I think about our players. That’s what I think about,” said Napier. “I think that was a good testament to the entirety of the group from a work ethic commitment, the depth was challenged. The entire process was challenged. We had a lot of players play some of their best football in their careers. And then you had some unknowns just step up out of nowhere and make incredible plays. And I think it’s a testament to the entire organization and young people, that’s not normal.”

This is something that Napier has done consistently during his tenure at Florida. He wants to celebrate his players and enjoy victories, because they are hard to come by. They are especially more difficult to come by at Florida, as Napier is now 22-23 as the Gators’ head coach.

“I do think that the game is about the players, and I’m proud of the players and the way they played. Never gonna make everybody happy in these leadership positions. When you’re in charge, these are the things that come with it. I love the game of football. I love the game,” said Napier.

However, there was one comment that showed he knew the inevitable was coming, which is something that the fanbase has been asking for since the beginning of the 2023 season.

“I’m gonna enjoy this one tonight,” Napier said. “That’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll wake up tomorrow and worry about what’s next.”

Tomorrow might not be worth enjoying for Napier.
