He was emphatic in his statement.

The Florida Gators struggled across the board against the LSU Tigers, losing 20-10, but the biggest factor was the struggles of quarterback DJ Lagway.

It was the worst game of Lagway’s career. He threw five interceptions, leading to 10 Tigers’ points, and those ended up deciding the game. Not only did Lagway have five interceptions, but four of them were on third down. The final one was arguably the worst of them all, when he just threw it into open space and hoped for the best.

DJ Lagway will remain the starting quarterback

There are a lot of questions circling about Lagway, with the main one being his future. Head coach Billy Napier isn’t considering benching Lagway, even with four-star true freshman Tramell Jones Jr. having made a huge impression.

“I don’t subscribe to that theory,” said Napier about Lagway after the loss to LSU. “DJ’s our quarterback. He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He made some tough, you know, made good decisions tonight, but he also made some bad decisions tonight, so, yeah. And, you’re talking about a guy who, you know, he’s a rookie himself.”

This is an important factor for the Gators. Lagway did struggle, but he’s somewhat of a rookie going into the 2025 season. Figuring things out will be a process, especially without having much practice time. Lagway didn’t throw during spring practice and was limited throughout fall camp, which has manifested in some struggles early on.

Being that Lagway has just 10 starts under his belt at the college level, there is still a lot of room to learn and grow. He can’t do that sitting on the bench, and getting those valuable reps will be huge for the Gators moving forward. A playoff berth is near impossible at this point, but there are still two more seasons of eligibility for Lagway, and that should keep Gators fans excited.
