DJ Lagway shows Lane Kiffin what he could have with the Florida Gators next season in impressive performance
We finally got to see the DJ Lagway from last season.
The Florida Gators weren’t seen a real threat to the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night, but they did a great job taking it to them in Oxford.
The Gators went into halftime with a 24-20 lead, but they struggled in the second half on offense, including a turnover in field goal range, leading to a 34-24 loss. Even though they lost the game, they were in the game from start to finish, and played really hard throughout, and it started with their starting quarterback.
DJ Lagway plays best game of the year against Lane Kiffin
It wasn’t a simple game for quarterback DJ Lagway on Saturday night. He went into a hostile environment and found a way to move the ball. It wasn’t a phenomenal statistical game for Lagway, as he completed 16-31 for 218 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while also running for 34 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Where we saw real growth was with how Lagway handled himself in the pocket.
You could see Lagway maneuver in the pocket very comfortably, something we haven’t seen with any form of consistency this year. He was fine staying in the pocket and only left when it got to be too long or pressure got to him. It took the Rebels the entire game to get their first sack on him, with Princewill Umanmielen getting a sack on the final drive.
There were some really nice plays, with the best of them all coming from Lagway in the second quarter when he threw a deep ball touchdown to J. Michael Sturdivant.
It was a really smooth throw from Lagway with really good accuracy and touch down the field. This is exactly what you want to see from him, and it gives Lane Kiffin on the opposite sideline an idea on what Lagway could look like in his offense if he ends up taking the Gators head coaching job.
After a really rough stretch of play from Lagway, seeing him look closer to the player we thought was an emerging superstar last year is a great sign moving forward.
