The Florida Gators are no strangers to seeing their players enter the transfer portal, especially those who are among the best on the team. Princely Umanmielen transferred to the Ole Miss Rebels two years ago after having one of the better edge rusher seasons in recent memory.

Monday morning brought huge news in the transfer portal, when it was announced that DJ Lagway intends to enter when it opens on Jan. 2.

This is a tough one for the Gators, as Lagway is the highest-ranked quarterback recruit they have had in Gainesville in over a decade (since Jeff Driskell). His consensus five-star status showcases his talent, but that didn’t always translate to success on the field.

He displayed his ability as a true freshman in 2024, going 6-1 as a starter, with the only loss being against the Georgia Bulldogs, when he injured his hamstring while leading at the end of the first half. He ended his true freshman season with a 59.9% completion percentage, 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

There were a lot of expectations this season for the Gators, but Lagway’s injury during the offseason hindered that. He threw 16 touchdowns, but also 14 interceptions during his 12 starts, and the Gators went just 4-8. There is still a lot of talent with the young star quarterback, but it’s evident that he needs to get healthy.
