Florida Gators football takes step toward landing massive in-state recruit with serious ties to their biggest competition
Jon Sumrall has been on a heater when it comes to recruiting.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has landed one recruit in the 2027 class in four-star cornerback Amare Nugent, and he’s putting in the work to make it better. The Gators have landed in the top-eight for four-star wide receiver Julius Jones Jr. from powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Wide receiver is one of the most important positions for the Gators’ fanbase, as there is a long history of success at the position. The likes of Ike Hilliard, Jabbar Gaffney, Percy Harvin, and Ricky Pearsall give the Gators a long, sustained legacy at the position.

In Sumrall’s first recruiting class, he landed three four-star wide receivers:
- Davian Groce
- Justin Williams
- Marquez Daniel
Getting those players into the building to build the position back up was huge for Sumrall, as was adding Eric Singleton Jr. and bringing back both Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III. The next player to get a major focus could end up being Jones.
He is the 70th-ranked recruit in the 2027 recruiting class per the Rivals Industry Ranking. He is also the 12th-ranked wide receiver and the No. 7 recruit in the state of Florida. Jones was on campus in Gainesville for Junior Day, and it made a big impact on him. So far, Jones has taken a total of seven unofficial visits to five different schools. Within those, Florida has stood out as the only school with multiple visit, as Jones has been on campus three times. It’s made an impact on Jones.
“This definitely helped with my view of Florida,” Jones told Rivals’ Chad Simmons. “I had a great relationship with the old staff, but after this visit, I feel like I have an even better relationship with this group of coaches. I was able to get around all the coaches and see everyone. They showed me a great amount of love.”
While there are seven other competitors to receive the commitment, the biggest comes from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. His dad played running back for Notre Dame and they are leading the way at over 90% on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine. However, being both an in-state school and already being on campus three times could be a huge benefit for the Gators.
