One position that the Florida Gators aren’t the strongest at is quarterback.

After losing DJ Lagway in the transfer portal, they added Aaron Philo from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He’s the likely starter going into the season, and he’s started just one game at the college level after being a three-star recruit out of the state of Georgia.

Outside of Philo, the Gators have Tramell Jones Jr. and incoming four-star Will Griffin. Essentially, the entire position group is full of question marks

Florida Gators lock in crucial visit with elite QB recruit Champ Monds

Head coach Jon Sumrall is going to make quarterback a priority, and they are locked in with multiple recruits. They are in play for five-star Elijah Haven, and have locked in a visit with four-star Champ Monds.

Originally in the 2028 recruiting class, Monds has reclassified to the 2027 class, and he’s got a lot of talent to work with. His scouting report from Rivals showcases a very talented player.

“Rivals’ top quarterback early on in the 2028 cycle, after turning in a strong freshman season. Has a physically-developed build, checking in at 6-foot-2.5, 220 pounds with massive 10.5-inch hands. Flashed a live arm and the ability to make high-level throws while passing for 2,234 yards and 23 touchdowns against five interceptions as a freshman. A true dual threat with good combine speed that translates to Friday nights. Is already load to tackle and rushed for 502 yards and nine touchdowns as a freshman.”

Monds has six visits scheduled this spring, and the Gators are the first ones off the bat. Having the first visit could prove to be huge for the Gators, as the rest of the staff can set the standard for his other visits. It’s a big advantage to go first, and it’s going to be the sixth time he’s been in Gainesville, and the second since the new staff took over.

Monds is the 23rd quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class per the Rivals Industry Ranking.
