High school recruiting is going well for the Florida Gators right now. Head coach Jon Sumrall has hired the right coaches to maximize recruiting, with the hope that it will make an impact on Saturdays.

The Gators are currently in play for multiple five-star recruits. Offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller is currently trending toward committing to Florida thanks to the relationship offensive line coach Phil Trautwein has built with him over the last two years. They also have locked up a visit with Texas Longhorns commit wide receiver Easton Royal, and are hoping to with offensive lineman Kennedy Brown.

Florida Gators in position to steal recruit from bitter rival Tennessee Volunteers

While the Gators are working on multiple five-star recruits, they are also going hard at multiple four-stars, and even three-stars. The latest they are after is three-star defensive back Kamauri Whitfield. He is ranked as a cornerback by Rivals, but a safety by 247 Sports. Overall, Whitfield ranks as the 520th recruit in the nation per the Rivals Industry Ranking.

Where things become interesting is how his recruitment has gone. He just de-committed from the Tennessee Volunteers and has scheduled a visit to Gainesville.

That shift is big for multiple reasons. It looks good for perception purposes since Tennessee is arguably their biggest rival. Seeing a defensive back makes sense, as they are about to be on their third defensive backs coach in the last three months, as Michael Hunter just accepted a job with the Los Angeles Rams.

Not only is it great for perception, but on the field as well. Whitfield has the Gators in the lead, and he’s second on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Getting one over on your biggest rival would be a huge coup for Sumrall, and it likely won’t be the last time it happens.
