Florida Gators secure second commitment in 2027 recruiting class at a position they have the most questions
Jon Sumrall secures a major win on the recruiting trail.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been working hard on the recruiting trail. After struggling mightily as a program to secure five-star recruits over the past few years under former head coach Billy Napier, but that isn’t the same anymore.
Right now, the Gators are in a good place with offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller and Texas Longhorns commit wide receiver Easton Royal. They are also looking to get in a better spot with offensive tackle Mark Matthews and quarterback Elijah Haven.

While the five-star recruits get top billing, the bulk of the roster is made up of three and four-stars. The first commit came from four-star cornerback Amare Nugent, and they received their second of the recruiting cycle with three-star tight end Jackson Ballinger, beating out the Indiana Hoosiers, Missouri Tigers, and Ole Miss Rebels.
The tight end position isn’t one where the Gators have a lot of secure answers, either short or long-term. The hope is one of Luke Harpring, Amir Jackson, or Lacota Dippre will step up and be the guy at tight end, but we won’t start getting information on that until the start of spring practice in March.
Ballinger is a three-star out of Centerburg, Ohio, and he ranks as the 25th overall tight end in the country and 392nd overall recruit per the Rivals’ Industry Ranking. At 6-5 and 230 pounds, Ballinger has the size profile of a future star at the position.
As a receiver, he displays plenty of burst for the position. Ballinger has plenty of linear speed to keep separation from defensive backs. He also displays a mean streak in blocking the run. His tape has multiple instances of pancake blocks, which are very effort-based. Get him in the weight room, and you can keep that going when he gets on campus.
There is still a lot more coming from this Gators recruiting class, and Ballinger is a nice find out of the Mid Atlantic.
