Florida Gators star makes a big statement to kick off the NFL Scouting Combine
Don’t overlook the fact that the Florida Gators have two specialists at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The NFL Scouting Combine is here, and the Florida Gators have something that no other college program has in Indianapolis: two specialists.
Kicker Trey Smack and punter Tommy Doman Jr. are both participating in drills at the combine, and they represent 28% of the specialists that were invited. Both players attended all-star games after the season, and are hoping to hear their names called during April’s NFL Draft.
Trey Smack impresses at NFL Scouting Combine
Wednesday was the first time that prospects hit the field at the combine with the specialists showcase. They went through a series of drills and Smack was one of the standouts, hitting a 60-yard field goal after being iced.
This is exactly what you want to see from Smack. He’s got a big leg and displayed it for the Gators. In his career, Smack was 53-64 on field goalsduring his three years as the starting kicker in Gainesville, including 10-13 from beyond 50 yards.
The interesting part about this past year was his success after a rough Week 1. He missed three of his four field goals against Long Island, and those struggles were just a blip on the schedule. The rest of the season played out significantly better, with Smack hitting 16 of his final 17 field goals and missing just one extra point.
Smack is one of, if not the, top kickers in the NFL Draft, and he showcased why on Wednesday afternoon. Don’t be surprised when he becomes the top kicker selected in the NFL Draft come April.
