‘Florida has made the biggest jump’ — National recruiting insider believes the Gators could land an elite five-star soon
Maxwell Hiller has been a main priority for the Gators.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall was being honest when he said he wasn’t going to hire his friends, and focus on the right coaches.
“I don’t hire a staff off of who are my buddies,” Sumrall said. “I hire a staff based upon what is the absolute best group of people we can put together to serve and develop our players and win championships at that place. Every place is different. When I walk into a new place, the first thing I do is I assess what’s there,” said Sumrall at his introductory press conference.”
That led the Gators to land a really good coaching staff, and the biggest asset thus far in recruiting has been offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. He has the Gators in great position for multiple five-star recruits, including Maxwell Hiller.
Steve Wiltfong believes Maxwell HIller could commit to the Florida Gators soon
Hiller has gotten multiple predictions to commit to the Gators, and it’s mainly due to the success of Trautwein.
“Florida had him on campus in January, and that’s all spearheaded by Phil Trautwein, Penn State’s former offensive line coach, who I thought Penn State was the very early leader for Maxwell Hiller, and a lot of that had to do with the relationship with Phil Trautwein, but also the track record of player development,” said Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong. “He’s got guys in the NFL that are well positioned for second contracts. He’s got guys in the draft this year that are going to hear their name called early. Now he’s a Florida alum back at his alma mater, a former champion, looking to help the Gators win their next national championship.”
It’s an open secret that Hiller likes Trautwein, as he visited Penn State 12 times while Trautwein was there and is set to visit the Gators for a second time. That relationship has been a huge factor in the Gators being in such great shape for Hiller, and he could very well be committing. Wiltfong points out that, while the Gators are in great shape, they need to hold off other programs, mainly the Alabama Crimson Tide.
“Maxwell Hiller loves Trautwein went down there for a visit,” continued Wiltfong. “Loved the energy and juice around the program that we’ve been talking about this segment, and Alabama was the team that led at the end of the fall going into the spring. Florida is the program that has made the biggest jump and still has a runway to continue to make a move. There is a lot of confidence, as we have talked about on the show, and as I have written around Gainesville for Maxwell Hiller, but Alabama’s not rolling over.”
If Hiller does commit soon, that could skyrocket recruiting for the Gators, as they failed to sign a top-50 recruit last year.
