The Florida Gators feel like they are inches away from firing head coach Billy Napier as they are set to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.

Despite having every resource you could ask for, Napier has not been able to lead the Gators to success on the field. They are 21-23 under Napier, while also going 0-14 on the road against ranked opponents. It hasn’t all been bad for the Gators during this time. They have some impressive wins in The Swamp, including a top 10 win over Texas just two weeks ago, plus Napier’s recruiting classes are solid across the board, including some big hits like quarterback DJ Lagway and wide receivers Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III.

Gators commit K.J. Ford comments on recruiting status

This year, Napier doesn’t have that prized five-star commit, but he has landed multiple talented players in the 2026 recruiting class, including his top two being from the state of Texas. Four-star edge rusher KJ Ford from perennial Texas high school power Duncanville. He was asked about the strength of his commitment and gave a pretty simple answer.

“I mean, still with Florida right now,” Ford told On3/Rivals on Friday. “Still hope out there. But other schools still trying to contact me, hoping I flip.”

Other schools have been very active in pursuing Ford with the Texas A&M Aggies and USC Trojans still pursuing him. However, a coaching change could change everything.

“It depends who the coach is,” Ford said. “It depends. Position coach, you’ve got to look at things, honestly.”

The Gators’ linebackers coach is Mike Peterson, and while he’s not in any danger of being fired this season, the removal of Napier could end up resulting in Peterson looking for work elsewhere. New head coaches often bring in their own position coaches, which could result in losing players like Ford in the recruiting class. This aspect can get lost in demanding that a program move on from their head coach. Yes, there is excitement in finding the next head coach of the program, but you can’t miss the forest for the trees.

Losing out on some of your top recruits is going to happen. It’s why you have to be careful in being too hasty with these decisions. Plus, the transfer portal is a big factor as well. Players can leave whenever they choose because of these new processes and, while it’s good for the overall health of college football, it can decimate a program.
