Florida Gators have tough competition for elite in-state recruit, including legacy ties to a bitter rival
The Florida Gators were once thought of as DBU, and are working on getting back to taht point.
The Florida Gators only have one recruit committed in the 2027 class in four-star cornerback Amare Nugent, but they are working hard on bringing in multiple top talents to Gainesville.
Head coach Jon Sumrall hired his staff with recruiting and talent development in mind, and it’s been working really well across the board. The biggest impact has arguably been offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. His work in getting five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller trending toward the Gators ahead of his scheduled visits this summer.
Cornerbacks coach Brandon Harris came over from the UCF Golden Knights and was a major part in landing the only recruit so far for the Gators, and he’s been working hard to bring in a running mate for Nugent.
Florida Gators in four-star CB Jaden Carey’s top seven
The secondary is going to be a priority under defensive coordinator Brad White, and they are putting in the work in recruiting. They are in the top seven schools for four-star cornerback Jaden Carey from powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
There are a lot of impressive schools in that group, including four teams from this year’s College Football Playoff. As things sit right now, the Hurricanes lead the way on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine at 40.9% with the Gators at 24.3%.
His dad, Marcus Carey, played with Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal in Coral Gables during his college days, making this a potential uphill battle for the Gators. Even so, he loved his trip to Gainesville earlier this year.
“They definitely sit at the top end of my list,” Carey recently told CaneSport. “Because they’ve been doing a great job. I mean just with the one visit, just showing me how much of a family atmosphere they have and showing how much they want me to be a Gator and be a part of what they’re building there. It’s really special.”
Going into visits this summer, Carey ranks as the 388th-ranked recruit and the 39th-ranked recruit in the state of Florida and as a cornerback.
