Florida Gators dealt brutal news that could cost Billy Napier another loss against a bitter rival and potentially more
Another brutal blow for the Florida Gators’ defense
The Florida Gators have taken another major hit on the defensive line. Starting defensive end George Gumbs Jr. is now doubtful for Saturday night’s game against the Miami Hurricanes due to injury.
It’s frustrating seeing Gumbs downgraded to doubtful the day of the game, but he was iffy going into Saturday. Not all hope is lost with Gumbs, as he did travel, but a report coming from someone like Pete Thamel isn’t great. It’s also important to note that defensive lineman Michai Boireau will also miss the game.
George Gumbs Jr. likely to miss Saturday’s game vs. Miami
Going into the season, head coach Billy Napier had one of the better defensive line groups in the country. It was meant to be a pivotal group on the defense and help elevate them to the status of a playoff team. With both Gumbs and Boireau out, it’s going to be a decimated group.
Not only are those two out, Caleb Banks was already ruled out earlier this week with a significant injury to his foot and L.J. McCray has been out for a couple of weeks with his own broken foot. That leaves four of the top eight defensive linemen out for Saturday’s game. The starting four is likely to consist of two of the original starters in Tyreak Sapp and Jamari Lyons, with Brendan Bett and Kamran James likely to fill the other two spots.
This is a tough spot for Ron Roberts’ defense to go into, especially with the high powered Hurricanes’ offense led by Carson Beck. If they can overcome it, maybe there is hope for the Gators this season.
