Jon Sumrall isn’t one to mince words, and had some bold ones for former Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway.

The transfer portal has become the biggest time of year in college football.

Head coach Jon Sumrall has been busy improving the Florida Gators during the first month of the season, and Tuesday was the biggest day thus far. They landed five commitments, including quarterback Aaron Philo, who will likely be the Gators’ starter this season. They needed to bring in a quarterback after DJ Lagway chose to leave the program.

Jon Sumrall pulls no punches with DJ Lagway

When Lagway entered the transfer portal, it was a surprise. He wanted to stay at Florida, but it didn’t happen. He’s been making visits to find his next team, and the Gators have moved on.

The entire transfer portal landscape is wild. Washington Huskies quarterback Demond Williams entered the transfer portal just days after re-signing with the program. Sumrall knows the feeling of a quarterback leaving him via the transfer portal, and he had a message for Lagway during a recent podcast appearance.

“I’m for DJ. I’ve had players I’ve coached that have left me. Darian Mensah was my quarterback at Tulane, pretty good,” said Sumrall. “I hope Darian Mensah has great success in his entire career. Unless I coach against him, [then] I want him to lose. Alright, we did that last year. We played against Darren. You know he did? He lost.”

Lagway just finished a visit with the Gators’ bitter rivals Florida State Seminoles, and that’s a major no-no when it comes to the fanbase. Sumrall’s statement was very clear: all bets are off when you leave my program.
