Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been incredibly active over the last 16+ hours since the transfer portal opened. They received an expert prediction to land Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo, along with multiple visits scheduled.

The Gators’ biggest visit is with Iowa State Cyclones cornerback Jontez Williams. He is the top cornerback in the transfer portal and will be visiting Gainesville next week.

Florida Gators secure visit from top transfer portal CB Jontez Williams

Sumrall is known for being a defensive coach. He led a really talented defense at Kentucky with his new defensive coordinator, Brad White, and the units at both Troy and Tulane were excellent. The defense is going to be a major factor in how Sumrall attacks the transfer portal.

Williams has great size at cornerback. He’s 6-2 and 185 pounds and he enters the transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining. There is a slight chance he can get a medical waiver after playing just five games with the Cyclones in 2025, but having him for 2026 will be a huge asset.

He broke out as a sophomore in 2024 and earned second-team All-Big 12 for his efforts. Being that he is the top cornerback in the transfer portal, Williams is in demand and will be visiting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Jan. 5th and 6th.

Florida Gators have a need at cornerback

This defense could use some help at cornerback. The Gators did secure starters with Cormani McClain and Dijon Johnson to return, but Devin Moore is entering the NFL Draft. Adding Williams to a cornerback room that needs another veteran would be a huge coup for Sumrall and White.

Williams also has some ties to the university. He is from the state and his mother is a graduate of the University of Florida. That kind of connection could prove to be critical in securing him.
