It’s a massive hire for Jon Sumrall, as Buster Faulkner runs explosive offenses wherever he coaches.

Upon receiving the Florida Gators head coaching job, Jon Sumrall made it very clear what he wanted to do: build an explosive offense.

“One of my first priorities will be to assemble an incredible staff, including an offensive coordinator who understands that, at Florida, having an explosive offense isn’t optional – it’s mandatory,” said Sumrall with his first statement to Gator Nation.

On Thursday, he made a very explosive hire at offensive coordinator by luring Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to the same position.

This is a fantastic hire by the Gators, who desperately needed to find an explosive element to their offense. We’ve seen quarterback DJ Lagway and running back Jadan Baugh show real explosive elements to their offense, and Faulkner has run one of the better offenses the last two years for the Yellow Jackets with Haynes King at the helm.

Our coaching expert, AJ Schulte, has been trying to figure out for a while why Faulkner hasn’t gotten more buzz from blue blood schools, and when you see how good his offenses have been, it’s very surprising.

“Faulkner produced productive offenses at Southern Miss and Arkansas State before spending time under Todd Monken at Georgia, learning from one of the best at using motion and mixing in play-action, and his results speak for themselves at Georgia Tech. He’s leaned heavily into the QB run game to force defenses to account for that “+1” in the box, and rips through the air to take advantage of that. Despite being known as a “run-first” team, GT under Faulkner is one of the most productive passing offenses in the country, sitting 90th percentile or better in Passing EPA, success rate, yards per pass, and explosiveness.

“Getting Faulkner access to the resources Florida can boast could give Jon Sumrall the exact offense he wanted to bring to Florida.”

Here’s something that’s really interesting with Faulkner. He turned down the same offer from the incumbent Yellow Jackets to go to Florida, meaning he wanted the opportunity to work with Sumrall, Lagway, and Baugh.

When you give a really good coach massive resources to play with, great things can happen, and Faulkner now has the chance to prove how good he is with those.
