‘It became a little too casual’ — Jon Sumrall identified one key thing wrong with Florida Gators’ program quickly
The Florida Gators will be in a great spot if Jon Sumrall can fix this one key aspect.
When Jon Sumrall became the head coach of the Florida Gators, he was taking over a program in disarray.
Former head coach Billy Napier did a lot to rebuild the infrastructure of the program, especially with the facilities. He wasn’t able to get that translated on Saturdays. Napier finished 22-23 as the Gators’ head coach, which prompted his firing just one day after a homecoming victory over Mississippi State in October.
Sumrall’s task is simple, yet very complex. He needs to identify what went wrong so he can fix it, while continuing to maximize what Napier was able to get right.
Jon Sumrall identified biggest weakness with Florida Gators
The biggest issue was not getting wins on Saturdays, but the root cause of it was something Sumrall identified quickly. He talked about how the weight room needs to be the focus on the latest episode of The Triple Option.
“There are good people in this building. There were the guys have been recruited here. I think there’s a high character,” said Sumrall. “Where I feel like we’ve had to really push the envelope here in developing this team is in the weight room, doing some of the dirty work, maybe to coach Meyer’s comment earlier, becoming a little bit more calloused. I think it became a little too casual, or a little too complacent, a little too comfortable. And so I think those things are probably where we’ve needed the most attention. That starts with the line of scrimmage. We’ve got a long way to go, man.”
Having strength in the weight room is a huge factor, because it’s one of the few things you can control as a team. Having the strength to dominate on the interior makes everything easier. Sumrall doesn’t just coach it, he lives it.
With the focus on the weight room with new strength and conditioning coordinator Rusty Whitt, the Gators are now on the right track for 2026 and beyond. Now, it just needs to carry over to Saturdays.
