Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been active in the transfer portal this cycle, and he’s landed some really intriguing players during this window. On Thursday afternoon, the Gators landed a huge commitment from Baylor Bears defensive tackle Samu Taumanupepe.

Taumanupepe isn’t just a big addition for the Gators in a metaphorical sense; he is in a literal sense, as he stands 6-3 and 376 pounds. He joins fellow defensive linemen DK Kalu and Emmanuel Oyabadejo in Gainesville, and it’s an important acquisition.

Going into the transfer portal, the defensive line was an area the Gators needed to address. They lost Caleb Banks, George Gumbs Jr., and Tyreak Sapp to the NFL Draft, while emerging star Michai Boireau entered the transfer portal. Sumrall wanted Boireau back, but he transferred to the Ole Miss Rebels.

With Boireau gone, the Gators needed to add depth on the defensive line, especially at nose tackle. Taumanupepe gives the Gators massive size on the interior. He will be a major factor in the Gators’ stopping the run this season.

Another intriguing factor in his commitment is that Taumanupepe becomes the third Baylor defensive player to commit to the Gators. Kalu and defensive back DJ Coleman were among the first players to commit. It raises the question: Why did the Gators choose to bring in three players from a Baylor defense led by Dave Aranda that wasn’t very good last season?

Whatever reason that was, the Gators believe that they will make an impact on Brad White’s defense this season.
