Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been spending a lot of his time recruiting his own players to stay in Gainesville next season. While he’s lost players like quarterback DJ Lagway and wide receiver Tre Wilson to the transfer portal, others like wide receiver Vernell Brown III have chosen to re-sign with the Gators.

The one area where teams recruit players this time of year is with those who have already announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal. With it not opening until January 2nd, there is still time to convince players to stick around.

Florida Gators re-sign TE Amir Jackson after previously announcing transfer portal intentions

One player who had previously announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal was tight end Amir Jackson. He did so on the same day as Lagway, but things changed for him, as reports surfaced on Saturday that Jackson had signed a new deal to stay with the Gators.

This is a big one for the Gators to retain. Starting tight end Hayden Hansen announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal when it opens, and having two of your top tight ends leaving isn’t great. Sumrall finding a way to get Jackson to stay is a big win and continues to prove his recruiting chops.

Jackson was the No. 7 tight end and a four-star in the 2024 recruiting class and played in all 12 games as a redshirt freshman. He only caught three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown, but there is a lot of potential with him as a pass catcher. With Buster Faulkner coming in, the tight end could be a bigger factor in the offense.

Even if Jackson doesn’t become a huge factor, Sumrall being able to flip him is a big deal, giving fans more data that he’s got the it factor.
