Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been on a tear over the last two weeks. Not only is he juggling two jobs, but he’s managing it at a high level. The Tulane Green Wave are set to take on the Ole Miss Rebels in the College Football Playoff on Saturday afternoon, and the Gators still need to get a full coaching staff together.

Sumrall has done a really good job overall finalizing his coaching staff, especially his coordinator hires in Buster Faulkner on offense and Brad White on defense. His latest target to fill a spot on his offensive staff is a really impressive one.

Jon Sumrall targeting Marcus Davis for wide receivers coach

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on Sunday afternoon that Sumrall has his target for wide receivers coach in former Auburn Tigers wide receivers coach Marcus Davis.

Davis was a player at Auburn from 2013-2016 and joined the staff in 2023. Before that, he was the wide receivers coach at Georgia Southers with Khaleb Hood in his room, and he was one of the best wide receiver at the Group of Five level. That’s not even the biggest feather in Davis’ cap. He helped recruit superstar wide receiver Cam Coleman.

As Zenitz mentioned above, he was listed as the sixth-best recruiter in the country, which is good for the Gators. Their wide receiver room is loaded with talent, but it’s also one the Gators’ fanbase wants to see talent at more than any other, stemming from the success of both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Could Davis lure Coleman to come to Gainesville to give quarterback DJ Lagway a superhuman team of weapons on the outside? It’s not going to be the only reason to make a hire, but it certainly could matter once the transfer portal opens.
