Evaluating Lane Kiffin’s landing spots: why Florida, LSU, and Ole Miss all have their own unique appeal
It’s a fascinating decision for Lane Kiffin with three really good options in front of him.
The biggest story in the college football world has centered around the coaching search of the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers. Why are they such a big story with the season going on? They both want Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin roaming their sidelines next season.
It’s not normal for a head coach potentially going to another program to be this big of a story, but these are extenuating circumstances. Kiffin has the Rebels with a 10-1 record heading into the Egg Bowl and is a near lock to make the College Football Playoff. We’ve never seen a Power-Four head coach depart a national championship contender for another school like this before, which makes it perfect for Kiffin
On Friday afternoon, Kiffin met with Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter, and the statement put out gave us an official date for his decision: Saturday, November 29th.
Where should Kiffin end up? Everyone seems to have their opinion on what is the best spot, so we go together the experts on Florida, LSU, and Ole Miss to break down why he should roam the sidelines for them next year.
Why Lane Kiffin should go to each destination
Lane Kiffin has a bond with Florida
When you think of Kiffin, what stands out to you? He’s a smack talking offensive guru who wears a visor. Sound familiar? It should, because that perfectly describes Steve Spurrier.
Kiffin has been very open about his admiration for Spurrier, and said as much during an appearance on Pardon My Take.
“I was like, I want to be Steve Spurrier,” said Kiffin. “When I watched him and his offenses and the visor and kind of the way he would throw jabs at other coaches and teams, I was like, ‘Steve Spurrier is the man.’ That’s what I want to be. That’s where I started the visor thing, and probably started some of the comments, maybe of other programs too, yes.”
The Gators are also close to Kiffin’s heart, as he had his first date with the mother of his children in Gainesville. The opportunity to go back to Florida, along with the chance to become the next Steve Spurrier puts the Gators over the top. LSU may have slightly better facilities and NIL, but they will never have the emotional attachment that Florida offers. Plus, the Gators have tremendous facilities and have stabilized their NIL program. He would walk right into a situation ready made for him to win immediately.

LSU has a lineage of national champions
The Lane Kiffin saga has been a fascinating one to follow, with the entire college football world waiting with bated breath to see how it all ends. To me, this saga should conclude with Kiffin going to LSU over the field. He would get completely unfettered access to one of the biggest recruiting hotbeds in the country in Louisiana, whereas he has to compete with two other blue bloods for in-state talent at Florida with FSU and Miami. Blue chip athletes flock to LSU every cycle, and it’s one of the top jobs in the country for a reason.
As good a job as Lane has done at Ole Miss, imagine what he could do with the resources and brand that LSU has built up. No disrespect to Florida, but so many players nowadays don’t remember the last time Florida was good. Many of them might not have even been born! However, all of them know about the 2019 LSU team and Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase. LSU has a winning brand, winning has seemingly been all that program has done for decades. Prior to Brian Kelly, their last three head coaches all won a national championship with the team. If Lane wants to win a title and win soon, LSU is the no-brainer choice in my mind.

He’s built something special at Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin should stay at Ole Miss. He has built the Rebels program into the perfect modern college football destination. The NIL collective and administrative system there has grown into one of the best in the nation, ready and willing to give Kiffin anything he needs to build a College Football Playoff contending team every year now.
The LSU Tigers and Florida Gators programs have fired two football coaches each in the span of Lane Kiffin’s six years with the Ole Miss Rebels as both have struggled to find their footing in this new age of college football. Both programs demand national championship contention annually, yet neither seem to possess internal organizational alignment to make that happen in today’s game.
Then there’s the personal side to it for Lane. He’s been quoted saying that he’s the happiest he’s ever been in several recent interviews. His family is entrenched there in Oxford. He must also know that leaving in the midst of Ole Miss’ greatest season ever with a potential championship on the line would immediately make him the biggest villain in the sport. There’s virtually no reason for him to leave outside of a mystery box that LSU and Florida hopes they can still pitch as superior programs (and they might not be in the very near future).
