The Florida Gators now know when they will find out the future of Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin.

Friday afternoon was when Kiffin was set to meet with Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter, and the hope was that there would be some clarity with his future. We got some, but not in the way we expected. Carter released a statement stating that Kiffin will coach the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State, and his future would be announced on Saturday, Nov. 29.

Lane Kiffin’s coaching decision is coming on Saturday, Nov. 29

Carter’s full statement says a lot about Kiffin’s future. Here is the statement:

“Coach Kiffin and I have had many pointed and positive conversations regarding his future at Ole Miss, including meeting today with Chancellor Boyce. While we discuss next steps, we know we cannot lose sight of what is most important — our sixth-ranked team that is poised to finish the regular season in historic fashion. Despite the outside noise, Coach Kiffin is focused on preparing our team for the Egg Bowl, and together, we want to ensure that our players and coaches can concentrate fully on next Friday’s game. This team is on the cusp of an unprecedented season, and it’s imperative they feel the support of the Ole Miss family in the week ahead. An announcement on Coach Kiffin’s future is expected the Saturday following the game.”

This certainly reads like a bunch of word salad for “Kiffin is not returning to Ole Miss next season.” If he were returning, someone from Ole Miss would have officially announced it. They are doing everything but saying that Kiffin will return to coach the Rebels next season, and it’s incredibly easy to say that. The Rebels have refused to do so at every turn, and it’s resulted in our current situation.

The real question is whether or not Kiffin will go to the Gators or the LSU Tigers? We have eight days to figure that out, and that decision will have a ripple effect on the SEC and college football as a whole.
