There are a lot of intriguing elements with Jon Sumrall‘s staff with the Florida Gators.

The hires on offense are really intriguing. Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner was a brilliant hire for the offense, especially when you consider his history of maximizing the talent with each offense he’s been in charge of. Offensive line coach Phil Trautwein has been an incredible recruiter so far with the Gators trending for five-star Maxwell Hiller.

Marcus Davis recruited Eric Singleton Jr. three times

The most interesting hire for the Gators was wide receivers coach Marcus Davis from the Auburn Tigers. He was the one who recruited wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and played a big role in landing him in Gainesville. Davis believes he can have a big future with the Gators.

“Yeah, he’s fast. He definitely brings speed to the team,” said Davis. “We [are] just in the process where he continues to learn and grow, but if he stays on the right track, anything can happen. So I think he’s been doing a good job of learning the things that we put on his plate so far, and he got a bright future ahead.”

Building a relationship to get him to Florida wasn’t a short or simple process. It came from recruiting him not once, not twice, but three times.

“Yeah, it was pretty cool. I actually recruited him when I was at Georgia Southern. So I had a previous relationship with him,” Davis continued. “And a funny story, he still had my number. Saved this coach Davis, Georgia Southern, so I told him he got to update it, and now he got to update it again. Yeah, we had a relationship back at Georgia Southern, back in 2022, when he came out of high school.”

That’s a big factor in bringing in players. Building those relationships early and often is huge, and they could continue coming into play as we move forward with the transfer portal becoming a huge part of the college football landscape.

Davis has that in him, and the rest of the coaching staff seemingly does.
