South Florida coach adds insult to injury after Gators’ shocking loss to Bulls

This is a brutal start to the in-season recruiting process for the Gators.

The Florida Gators had a brutal day on Saturday when the South Florida Bulls pulled off the upset 18-16 in The Swamp. Fans and analysts across the nation were calling for head coach Billy Napier to get fired and replaced immediately.

Things are rough for the Gators as they head to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers next weekend. Things are likely going to get worse, and the Bulls didn’t waste time rubbing it in.

South Florida immediately called Gators commit Javarii Luckas

Right after the game, the Bulls were on the phone working some recruiting angles, including talking to Gators commit offensive tackle Javarii Luckas, asking him if he enjoyed the game.

The one thing Napier has going for him is recruiting. He has the Gators recruiting very well, as they currently sit with 19 commits and the 13th-ranked recruiting class. They are also in the driver’s seat to land a five-star quarterback in 2027 class, Elijah Haven. It’s a big deal that Napier is recruiting well because he needs to give the administration a reason to stay.

It’s a good thing that Napier has been so good when it comes to recruiting, as Luckas didn’t seem to be moved by the conversation. He just thought it was funny.

“I mean, it doesn’t really do nothing to be honest,” Luckas said when asked about the impact of USF’s victory on his recruitment. “It really just shows they are a decent team this year. One coach from there texted me after the game asking if I enjoyed the game…”

Recruiting never ends, and the Gators may need to play damage control if things start to spiral over the next few weeks. The Gators could be smart to remove Napier as the head coach sooner than later, because the interim staff can play damage control for multiple weeks before signing day in December.
