Jon Sumrall’s recruiting takes massive leap forward with the Florida Gators set to host the top overall recruit
It’s been awhile since the Florida Gators were realistic competition for the top overall recruit in the nation.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has made a lot of waves within the first few months of his tenure. One of the big things that he’s done as the head coach is spike recruiting.
They are in the market for multiple five-star recruits. Right now, the Gators are in a good place with offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller and Texas Longhorns commit wide receiver Easton Royal. They are also looking to get in a better spot with offensive tackle Mark Matthews and quarterback Elijah Haven. This weekend, things are getting better in that sense for the Gators.
Florida Gators to host Jalen Brewster on a visit
Over the weekend, the Gators are set to host five-star and the top recruit according to Rivals, defensive lineman Jalen Brewster.
Out of Cedar Hill, Texas, Brewster measures in at 6-3 and 300 pounds. All three recruiting services have him as the top defensive lineman. He committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in October, giving them the top defensive lineman in back-to-back classes with LaDamian Guyton having signed in December.
It’s a massive coup for Sumrall to get Brewster to visit, as they haven’t been one of the schools mentioned with his recruitment. His scouting report from Rivals’ Charles Power highlights a potential top overall pick.
“Uber-athletic defensive line prospect with true game-wrecking ability. Measured in at around 6-foot-3, 300 pounds prior to his junior season. Tests as an elite athlete in the combine setting, easily cracking 5.0 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Carries that athleticism over to the field where he has flashes of dominance on Friday nights. Lines up all over the defensive line for Cedar Hill (Texas) while facing top competition. Dangerous pass rusher from any spot. Combines explosive get-off with the movement skills of a much smaller player, carrying elite testing numbers directly onto the field. Consistently collapses pockets and disrupts plays before they develop. Has legitimate game-wrecking moments on film. The quickness to dart into the backfield and the speed to hunt down ball carriers is eye-popping. May not possess premier length. Father was a third-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys. Tracking as the top defensive line prospect early on in the 2027 cycle with the upside to be an early NFL Draft pick.”
The last time the Gators landed the top overall recruit was linebacker Ronald Powell in the class of 2010. Only time will tell if the Gators will end up getting seriously involved in his recruitment, but getting a visit during spring practice is a major step forward.
