Unexpected former Florida Gators standout just made NFL history, and he’s likely just scratching the surface with his potential
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Chimere Dike broke an NFL record previously held by Hall of Famer Tim Brown in Week 17 game vs. New Orleans Saints.
When the Tennessee Titans selected Florida Gators wide receiver Chimere Dike with the first pick in the fourth round this past April, many draft experts were confused by it. He wasn’t viewed as a fourth-round player, and when the Titans selected Elic Ayomanor 33 selections later, the discussion was focused on him being the better player.
This season for the Titans, it’s been Dike who’s stood out in multiple ways. He cemented his tremendous rookie season on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints with an NFL record.
Chimere Dike breaks Tim Brown’s NFL rookie record
Earlier this week, Dike was named the Pro Bowl Games’ returner for the AFC, thanks to his impressive season returning both kickoffs and punts. That work has vaulted Dike into unprecedented territory, as he broke Pro Football Hall of Famer Tim Brown’s rookie record for most all-purpose yards in a season.
It’s an impressive feat for the rookie, especially since he never had an explosive season in college at Wisconsin or Florida. Heading into Sunday’s game against the Saints, Dike has been a weapon on offense as well. He tallied 41 receptions for 341 yards and four touchdowns, along with 382 punt return yards with two touchdowns, and 1,535 kick return yards.
On offense, Dike has been used as a screen guy, along with someone they have sent on deep crossing patterns to attack vertically with his sub 4.4 speed. Anytime you get compared to a Pro Football Hall of Famer, especially someone as dynamic as Brown was after winning a Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame for both his wide receiver and return skills.
Seeing this kind of success for Dike out of the gate is huge for his potential. Day three picks often don’t get significant chances right away, and getting a Pro Bowl berth in year one is going to make a difference for his long-term success. The Titans have themselves a weapon in Dike long-term, and he’s already paying dividends as a rookie.
