Florida Gators have a secret weapon on their roster, and he will help Jon Sumrall restore the feeling in Gainesville
One of the biggest priorities for the Florida Gators was to retain former five-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III after a tremendous freshman season. and it wasn’t only for his on-field performance.
Florida Gators HC Jon Sumrall made retaining the top players from the 2025 team his main priority. He spent Christmas Eve at running back Jadan Baugh‘s parents’ house to get him back to Gainesville, and it was successful.
Baugh wasn’t the only one whom the Gators were able to retain. They also kept wide receiver Dallas Wilson, edge rusher Jayden Woods, and wide receiver Vernell Brown III. The latter has made an impact that extends beyond the field.

Vernell Brown III is making an impact as a leader
The media got to speak to Eric Singleton Jr. on Wednesday about a multitude of different topics, including why he chose Florida. One of the biggest takeaways was the leadership of Brown.
“He’s a very vocal leader,” said Eric Singleton. “At the schools I’ve been at, I haven’t seen anything like it, so I think it’s rare.”
Watch for yourself, as Brown addresses the entire team is on their latest episode of This Is The Swamp after originally surfacing on social media.
“We come in every Wednesday morning and Friday morning, and they all say the same. We didn’t beat it because of attention to detail. Competitive excellence is effort and attention to detail. If you work it hard, but you’re not detailing, don’t. Everybody a hard worker. What are you doing that separates you? If we if we can’t all lock in for 50 minutes, we got nine more minutes. But no, we are not detailed because we trying to beat the man next to us at the end. It’s not a race! It’s everybody against the drill, it’s a collective effort. It takes a team. It’s everybody to beat the gauntlet. And if we’re not gonna do it, if you don’t want to do it, take your own, or I will take the 20, 30, 40 updowns, whatever up to make up for not being here.” Man, let’s go.”
It’s incredibly impressive to see Brown taking on this role. The son of former Gator Vernell Brown II, he understands why it’s important for the details.
“It really helped us because it made us emphasize the details,” Brown said via The Gainesville Sun. “Because it’s not necessarily the drill that is super hard, but when you’ve got to be detailed, make sure you finish through the line, make sure your foot behind the line, make sure the line is straight. And I think it’s the things like that that really make you understand that the little things aren’t so little.”
It’s making an impression on people throughout the program, including offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
“He’s a natural-born leader,” Faulkner said, “He’s not afraid to step out front, lead the guys. He knows the offense right now, probably as good as any of the new coaches. So, he’s a joy to be around, and I like the fact that he puts in the work, right? He’s truly about it.”
Once the Gators get on the field come the fall, Brown’s leadership could come in very handy.
