Florida Gators stand out at Reese's Senior Bowl
Senior Bowl practices are quite an interesting event. It gives players an opportunity to showcase their skills in both a team and individual format against the best in the college football world. It's a huge proving ground, especially for those players who come from a lower level of college football.
For the Gators, it's about showing that you deserved your invite and they showed out in a big way.
Arguably the biggest winner on the day was James. A linebacker known for his athletic range and ability to attack ball carriers in space, James shined in other areas on Tuesday afternoon.
Among all the linebackers in Mobile, James was arguably the best among them on the first day of practice. He shined in pass coverage against the running backs, putting himself in position to make plays.
This clip personifies the day that James had. He was very patient in all of his coverage reps, waiting for the running back to make the first move on the option route. He does that and explodes, creating a tight throwing window for the quarterback. That's what you want to see and those will end up getting positive results, including pass breakups, with consistency.
The other player that stood out was Jackson. He is a mammoth of a man at 6' 6 1/2" and 339 lbs, which makes him a very intriguing nose tackle prospect. The one aspect that he did show at Florida was the ability to penetrate quickly. He flashed that quickness on Tuesday in drills.
That bend for a nose tackle is absurd. Now, you aren't going to ask him to bend around the edge much, but being able to do so is a great thing to see.
There will be a lot more from the Gators at the Senior Bowl, but they had a really good start in the first practice.
