The Gators are primed to have a huge season this year, and it’s because of the presence of Lagway. He was a five-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class, and the hype surrounding him has been palpable ever since he arrived on campus.

Fans wanted Lagway to start immediately once he got on campus, but that didn’t come to fruition, as Graham Mertz was the starting quarterback for the Gators. Lagway got to rotate in, even getting his first start in week two against Samford, where Lagway threw for over 400 yards and looked every bit of his five-star ranking.

Over the course of the first month he played, Lagway was inconsistent, and it wasn’t completely unexpected. It’s a tough transition from high school to college, even coming from Texas 6A. Once Lagway took over for Mertz in the Tennessee game after the latter suffered a torn ACL, the Gators didn’t just stabilize, they began to thrive in more ways than one.

One of the reasons why so many are high on Lagway and the Gators is the way the team performed with Lagway as the starting quarterback. They went 6-1 with Lagway as the starting quarterback, and the only loss that the Gators suffered was against Georgia, and they were up by seven points at the end of the second quarter when Lagway left with a brutal hamstring injury.

That’s also where things are a little bit more interesting. The injury completely zapped Lagway’s mobility, which caused him to become a pure pocket passer over the rest of the season. That is going to help him project forward over the course of his career.

Don’t be surprised if Lagway emerges and wins this and other awards.
