The Florida Gators have been active in the transfer portal this year, working to fortify the roster surrounding star quarterback DJ Lagway.

They added wide receivers J. Michael Sturdivant and five-star recruit Dallas Wilson to the roster in December to help Lagway take the next step in the SEC toward the College Football Playoff.

The 2025 roster looks much better than what they had in 2024, but they lost a recent commit, oddly enough because of Lagway.

Florida Gators see prospect de-commit due to DJ Lagway

On Monday afternoon, 247 Sports reported that former Charlotte quarterback DeShawn Purdie, who had committed to Florida, had his signed status removed. What makes this interesting is that by being released from his signed status that he cannot be contacted by an SEC program.

Now, the interesting thing here with Purdie is he reportedly went to Florida because of a belief he would start over Lagway.

According to On3 Sports' Gators Online, the hope was that Purdie would be the QB2 and compete to start in 2027.

For Florida, this is a notable loss. The hope was Purdie could challenge for the No. 2 QB spot behind returning starter DJ Lagway and then compete for the starting job in 2027. He completed 100 of 200 passes for 1,802 yards, 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions as a true freshman at Charlotte last season and many believe his ceiling is high.

Right now, the Gators don't have a solid option at QB2 with Clay Millen, Aidan Warner, and four-star recruit Tramell Jones. They could still be in the portal looking for a quarterback to fortify the position.

The puzzling thing here is Purdie allegedly thought he was going to start. If that report is true, it's a wild one because Lagway is immediately a Heisman Trophy contender in 2025.
