Florida State fans have to grasp on to the future right now. The program has moved onto its third quarterback this season, and it is sitting with a putrid 1-6 record after losing to Duke 23-16 on Friday night.
After three turnovers on consecutive plays against Duke on Friday, Florida State switched quarterbacks. Freshman Luke Kromenhoek replaced Brock Glenn in the second quarter.
Kromenhoek entered the game with 9:51 remaining in the half, shortly after Duke had extended their lead to 17-3 with a field goal.
He stayed in as quarterback for the remainder of the half, successfully leading a drive culminating in a field goal, bringing the score to 17-6 with 1:46 left before halftime. He returned to play with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
At the time of his exit, Glenn had completed 3 of 10 passes for 37 yards, thrown two interceptions, and lost a fumble. Kromenhoek ended the first half with 2 completions on 5 attempts for 12 yards in his first game experience of the season.
Kromenhoek joined Florida State this year as a significant addition to their recruiting class. A product of Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School was a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 45 player in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, which averages scores from all four major recruiting outlets.
Florida State has now turned to its third quarterback this season amid a challenging 1-5 start. DJ Uiagalelei, a highly-rated transfer from Oregon State, had surgery on his hand and is currently sidelined, prompting Glenn to take the starting role.
Glenn had previously thrown for 228 yards and two touchdowns on 23 of 41 passing in their last game against Clemson before FSU’s bye week.
Head coach Mike Norvell commended Kromenhoek and Glenn for their professionalism and preparation in practice following Uiagalelei’s injury, stating that their readiness would pay off when called upon to play.
“I’ve been really pleased how both of those guys have prepared each and every week leading up because you never know when that opportunity is going to present itself,” Norvell said. “Obviously, the door is open now and I’m excited to see them go through it.”
