DJ Lagway’s transfer portal tour continues: Baylor waits, while Florida State sees a medical concern
What can we make of the most recent transfer portal buzz around former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway?
It has been a hectic last few weeks for former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway. After some initial conversation with head coach Jon Sumrall and the new Gators staff, the former five-star signal caller opted for the transfer portal. Since then, Lagway’s time has been filled with visits, speculation, rumors, and uncertainty.
Since the 6-3, 242-pound quarterback entered the portal, there have been a lot of programs mentioned as potential landing spots for him. The recent buzz has been around Baylor and Florida State, but the Ole Miss Rebels have taken over the news most recently. As always, there is some context to consider, and more truth to figure out.
Where will the Texas native spend his final two years in college? Things seem to change every day, but there does appear to be some light at the end of the tunnel.
Where does Baylor stand with Lagway?
After a recent visit to Baylor, it seemed like that could be the most likely final destination for Lagway. His father played college football for the Bears, and he has known the school for a very long time. There was a lot of support, including from former Baylor great Robert Griffin III, for Lagway to return to the Lone Star State.
The vibes were strong after the visit. It felt like only a matter of time until an announcement was made. Unfortunately for Baylor offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and head coach Dave Aranda, they are still waiting for a decision. The latest doesn’t sound overly positive for the Bears, at least not right now.
Florida State medical concern
Before the trip to Baylor, Lagway made his way to Tallahassee to meet with Florida State. The most talented of the signal callers on the board for the Seminoles, Lagway was viewed as a really intriguing fit to replace the departed Thomas Castellanos. It felt like, for a moment at least, that this fit may have made a lot of sense.
According to multiple sources, Lagway’s medicals led Florida State to change course and pursue other quarterback options. There is an expectation that Lagway will have or need surgery on his throwing shoulder this offseason, according to those sources. The exact diagnosis and timeline for a potential recovery are uncertain at this point, but it appears highly likely that this is the second straight offseason where the talented passer could miss substantial time.
If you think back to last offseason, Lagway missed substantial time due to multiple injuries. That included a sports hernia surgery that limited him during spring practice. Lagway also spent most of the offseason rehabbing a shoulder issue that stems from a high school baseball injury. It began bothering him at the end of the 2024 season and forced the team to rest him on and off.
To help with pain management, Lagway is on record as having to fine-tune his mechanics, including shortening his throwing motion. Perhaps this is just a string of bad luck, or it could be a much bigger issue. Regardless, that does make Lagway a bit of a gamble, although a talented one. It’s understandable why a team like Florida State may be a bit hesitant.
Ole Miss is making a push
With the recent news of Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss having his waiver for a sixth year denied, the Rebels are now firmly in the transfer portal market. Although former Auburn signal-caller Deuce Knight has received a ton of buzz recently, it appears Ole Miss is also making a run at Lagway. That includes a visit planned for this weekend.
If Ole Miss opts for Knight, it will be interesting to see where Lagway turns next. Baylor could end up being the pick in the end, but there is still some uncertainty for what the final decision might look like. The former Florida signal caller is in the middle of an interesting portal process, and things could get very interesting down the stretch.
