Florida State issues a statement that makes it clear where they stand on Mike Norvell’s immediate status amid a spiraling season
The school’s immediate plans around Norvell after FSU’s latest embarrassing loss were made clear on Monday.
The Florida State Seminoles are in the midst of another losing streak under head coach Mike Norvell. After Saturday’s deflating 20-13 loss at Stanford, the Seminoles are back under .500 on the season at 3-4.
Speculation has arisen over the last couple of weeks about his job security after loss to Pittsburgh and Stanford, and recent rumblings have had FSU decisionmakers talking on Sunday about whether to part ways with Norvell.
That apparently isn’t going to happen until the end of the season. The university sent out a statement saying they’ll conduct a “comprehensive assessment” after the season and that they are “committed to helping Coach Norvell” and the team rebound.
Florida State will make a ‘comprehensive assessment of the football program’ after the season is over
“Florida State football benefits from unmatched passionate support from the entire FSU family, and the commitment to our football program is unwavering,” Florida State athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement released to the media. “We rightfully have high expectations in everything we do to represent Florida State in the manner that built our reputation as one of college football’s best programs, cultivating an extraordinary group of supporters nationally and globally.
“We embrace those expectations while also sharing the deep disappointment when results on the field are short of that standard. As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season’s end. Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks.”
So, for the time being, it appears as though Norvell won’t suffer the same fate as James Franklin at Penn State. He has some time to prove he can turn around a bad situation and salvage what’s left of the season.
The Seminoles are on a bye week this weekend and return to action on Saturday, November 1 against Wake Forest in Tallahassee. The Demon Deacons are a solid 4-2, but they’re a team that Florida State should dispatch of – if they can finally return to playing to the potential that they showed against Alabama in the opener, or even anywhere remotely close to it.
After Wake is a trip to take on a suddenly bad Clemson team that came into the season with high expectations. A poor Virginia Tech team awaits FSU at home the following week, with trips to NC State and Florida left to finish out the year.
The chances are there for FSU to at least get bowl eligible, which would be a step forward from 2024. But it’s going to take a completely different team from what we’ve seen the last month for that to happen. And if it doesn’t, it seems very likely that post-season comprehensive assessment won’t be pretty for Norvell.
