Florida State WR Duce Robinson turns social media ablaze with coming out party on Saturday
A huge day from the USC transfer.
Florida State is soundly in control in their second game of the season, blowing the doors off of East Texas A&M 49-0 at halftime. Although the Seminoles came into the game as enormous favorites, it’s clear they did not take their opportunity coming off the heels of a 31-17 season-opening win over then-#8 Alabama for granted.
Florida State stepped on ETA&M’s throats from the outset, going up 21-0 in the first quarter on the way to a 77-3 win. By the time the teams were heading into the locker room after 30 game minutes, Florida State had scored on all seven offensive possessions and tallied 2 interceptions and forced 5 punts on the other side of the ball.
Sometimes it’s tough to take much from games like these, but every now and then, even in lopsided games, a player can announce his arrival to the rest of the country. That’s just what USC transfer WR Duce Robinson did on Saturday in Doak Campbell Stadium. And plenty of people took notice.
FSU’s Robinson sent Twitter/X crazy with an 82-yard touchdown in the first quarter
Robinson had a tremendous first half, finishing with 5 catches for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, one play in particular got fans buzzing on Twitter/X.
With FSU up 14-0 and with the ball after forcing a punt late in the first half, Thomas Castellanos dropped back to pass on the midfield logo. He launched a ball deep downfield and into the end zone. Robinson was close with the defender, but he got separation, leapt back, and pulled it down for the score.
The catch put him at 3 for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns at that point, and some made reference to Randy Moss’s Thanksgiving game against Dallas with a similar stat line, among other reactions.
Robinson also scored on an 82-yard touchdown on the previous drive on an easy catch and run.
Robinson committed to Florida State back in December after spending his first two seasons in USC. He totaled 39 catches for 747 yards and 7 touchdowns in two seasons with the Trojans. He flashed some major playmaking ability in fall camp last month, shedding a little bit of light on the potential he has in the hands of Mike Norvell and Gus Malzahn.
That showed up in a big way on Saturday, albeit against players who wouldn’t be starting material for any FBS team. However, the level at which Robinson completely outmatched the players he was going up against still showcased his superior speed, athleticism, and hands.
We’ll get a better feel in a few weeks when the Seminoles up their level of play against Virginia in FSU’s ACC opener, but for now, Nole fans should be feeling pretty good about having a player who could be a difference maker in what could be a big bounce back season.
