When it comes to their athletics, the Florida State Seminoles don’t have a whole lot going on for them right now. The football program has been bad for a few years, and the same with the men’s basketball program. The women’s team was good last year, but it isn’t good at all this year.

Then there is baseball and softball, the sports that are undoubtedly carrying the athletics department right now. As far as baseball, they are picking right back up where they were last season. In 2024 and 2025, they won at least 40 games each and were among the top 25 teams in the country.

It’s still early, but it looks like they could easily finish this season the same way. On Friday, they beat a very good team and made it look way too easy. In a way, it was a message sent to the rest of the ACC that FSU is going to be a problem.

Seminoles beat Michigan 6-1 to start Amegy Bank College Baseball Series

A big-time sixth inning saved the Seminoles’ undefeated season. The No. 16 team in the country flew down to Arlington, Texas, to play in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series against the Michigan Wolverines on Friday. Michigan, entering the game with just one loss on the year, looked like a team poised to make a run this season if it could get its bats working. However, that hope faded when the Wolverines ran into Wes Mendes on the mound.

Mendes finished his outing with 5.1 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, one hit allowed, and no earned runs. In fact, Michigan didn’t even end up scoring until the ninth, which would have been the Seminoles’ first shutout of the season. This season, the most runs the Noles have given up were five in a run-rule game against James Madison. Their pitching seems to be the team’s strength, but the season is still early, and depth/the bullpen will be tested.

Gabe Fraser was the hot bat in this one, with a triple and a double to go against Michigan. However, Fraser didn’t have any RBIs in this one; instead, Brayden Dowd and Jase Estes were the two primarily driving in runs. The Noles bats went to work in the sixth inning, scoring three of their sixth runs then.

But if they want to keep this up, the bats will have to be a bit better and a bit more consistent, and not leave runners on base as often as they did. The pitching and defense have to be a bit better, too, as the Noles had three errors on Friday.

On Saturday, FSU will play No. 9 Auburn. This is a huge opportunity to send a stronger message to the rest of college baseball.
